Children's Mercy

Today we took Graham down to Children's Mercy in Kansas City for a second opinion on his arm. Our doctor in Des Moines, who completed his Fellowship at Children's Mercy, told us about how strong the brachial plexus program was there so it seemed like a logical place to get a second opinion.

Our visit couldn't have gone better! Everyone clearly knew who referred us and told us how great Dr. Ramsey (DSM doctor) is - a great start to our visit. We met with a PT and then the doctor. Both were impresses with Graham's range of motion, especially given how little he moved his arm when born and his slow initial recovery (little movement before his first 2-3 months). Everyone spent time with us and I didn't feel like we were just rushed through so they could see the next patient. We discussed the concerns we have - Graham's strong preference to use his right arm, his tight elbow, how his arm seems to be slightly bent at all times, potential lasting effects - and they told different exercises we can do to help correct and avoid problems, such as tape his right hand into a fist so he's forced to use his left hand when playing. They also gave us a brace to hold Graham's arm in a straight position when he sleeps.

And, the best news - the doctor told us that Graham does not need nerve surgery! (Huge sigh of relief!) Though the doctor feels it is highly unlikely, the only reason we would revisit surgery is if his shoulder gets tight, drastically reducing his range of motion. In this case we would discuss muscle and tendon lengthening procedures. The doctor also told us that he doesn't foresee Graham having limitations in terms of sports - and, group activities as a child will only help him. Overall, we couldn't have asked for better outcome! Children's Mercy will continue to monitor Graham - our next appointment is at the end of April - but, in the meantime, we'll continue physical therapy here in Des Moines.

To add to our great day - Graham was in the best mood. Since Toys R Us is strategically placed right next door to Children's Mercy (brilliant), we ran in for a new (alright, two) celebratory toys for G...blocks and a toy remote which occupied him all night long! I think he's also starting to feel better (finally)...and, maybe spending the day with Mom and Dad helped a little too. :)

Yummy yogurt melts.
I love my new toys!
Bath time is fun too.
My new brace.
